Keep the official apps, or work inside Conductor
With Pairbar there's no new place to chat. You keep the Claude and Codex desktop apps as Anthropic and OpenAI ship them, updates included, and start chats there (or from Pairbar's composer, which opens them there). Pairbar lays one list over their sidebars with Working, Needs you and unread marks, PR badges and subagents, and clicking a row opens the chat in its own app.
In Conductor, you create a task and it gets a workspace: a branch, a copy of the files, a terminal, a diff and a review path. Conductor comes with its own installation of Claude Code and Codex and signs in with your existing API key or Claude plan. The agents' conversations live inside Conductor.
Where Conductor is stronger
- Free to start, with parallel agents and local workspaces on the Free plan, using your own subscriptions or keys.
- Isolation per task is the default workflow, not an option you remember to tick.
- Review built into each task: every workspace has its diff and a review path.
- More agents: Cursor and OpenCode as well as Claude Code and Codex.
- Team and cloud options on paid plans: cloud workspaces, multiplayer for up to 5 people, an API and mobile access (Pro).
Where Pairbar is stronger
- The official apps stay your interface, including features only those apps have, and your regular Claude chats a ⌥-peek away.
- Both plans' limits at a glance: the Claude and Codex usage rings, plus a Claude-or-Codex suggestion for new chats based on what's left.
- Anthropic and OpenAI cloud chats in the same list as local ones.
- Search what was said in every chat of both apps, and a Spotlight-style panel (⌃⌥K) from any app.
- Tasks across both apps: the Tasks view groups every chat on a branch or worktree, local and cloud, with its PR and checks, and suggests next steps as plans you approve first.
- Claude and Codex docked together in the basket, side by side, stacked or in Focus, with live status from the apps' own hooks if you turn them on.
- Scheduled workflows and check-ins, with per-step permission levels and a goal check. See check-ins.
- Agent requests with approvals: a chat can ask for a second opinion or a review from the other app, a helper chat or a workflow run; each waits for your approval in Pairbar unless you've allowed that kind, within budgets. See agent actions.
Caveats on the Pairbar side
Pairbar is paid ($49/year ($39 first year with LAUNCH), $9/month or $129 lifetime (first 200 buyers)) after a 7-day trial; runs only on macOS 26 or later with Apple silicon, and depends on undocumented local files of the Claude and Codex apps, so an app update can break a feature until Pairbar catches up. It doesn't have a diff viewer.
Can you use both?
Yes. They don't overlap on screen: Pairbar only appears over the Claude and Codex windows. You could run isolated batches in Conductor and keep your hands-on chats in the official apps with Pairbar. Conductor uses its own bundled copies of the agents, and whether Pairbar lists the sessions Conductor starts isn't documented or tested.
One thing both see is your plan: if Conductor signs in with the same Claude plan, that usage counts against the same limits, which Anthropic says are shared across Claude surfaces. Pairbar's Claude ring shows the plan's current numbers.
Who each is best for
- Pairbar: Mac users on macOS 26 who like the official Claude and Codex apps and want one list, both plans' limits, search and scheduled workflows across the two.
- Conductor: Mac users who want each task in its own isolated workspace with a diff and review path, want Cursor or OpenCode too, or want a free starting point.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Conductor use the Claude desktop app?
- No. Conductor's FAQ says it comes bundled with its own installation of Claude Code and Codex and uses your existing authentication, such as an API key or a Claude plan.
- Are both Mac-only?
- Yes. Conductor always runs on your Mac. Pairbar needs macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon.
- Does Pairbar isolate agents like Conductor?
- Only when you ask: the composer's Worktree chip starts a chat on a new branch in a separate worktree so your current checkout isn't touched. Conductor gives every task its own workspace by default.
- Can Pairbar show sessions started in Conductor?
- That isn't documented or tested. Pairbar lists chats from the Claude and Codex desktop apps, reading Claude Code transcripts from
~/.claude/projectsand Codex's own database.
