Use case

Dictate to Codex: talk to the Codex app instead of typing

Pairbar is a macOS app that lets you dictate to the Codex desktop app: a small mic pill sits under Codex's message box, and clicking it (or pressing ⌃⌥Space) turns what you say into a clean prompt. The words show as you speak; when you stop, Whisper refines them on your Mac and a quick polish by your own Codex, on the plan you already have, tidies them, with a stop budget that scales with dictation length. ↩ sends it to the thread. It works with Codex alone; you don't need Claude.

The problem

Codex tasks need context: the bug, the files, the constraints. Typing all of it is slow, and plain dictation mangles code words (--dry-run, useTheme, your branch name) and keeps every filler, so you end up rewriting the prompt anyway.

How Pairbar solves it

  1. Click the mic pill
Click the microphone under Codex's message box or at your screen edge, or press ⌃⌥Space. It grows into one native Liquid Glass recording capsule. Hover it or click the level lines to open the transcript at that same anchor, with Codex's icon showing the destination.
  2. Describe the task out loud
Words appear as you speak. Automatic detection uses your configured supported languages. Project vocabulary helps preserve English technical terms, file, branch and skill names. Press 4 for Code mode when you're dictating names and symbols.
  3. Stop: refine and polish
Whisper refines the words on your Mac, then your own Codex gives them a quick polish (or Pairbar polishes on your Mac). The polished prompt blurs in.
  4. Send it to the thread
↩ sends, ⇧↩ reviews first, ⌥↩ inserts into Codex's box to edit, Esc cancels.

Correct words for next time

After insertion, rate the dictation with thumbs up or thumbs down. Thumbs down opens the words: choose one word or the first and last words of a phrase, then save a replacement with Learn correction. Corrected words are marked green. Choose Add another to fix the remaining words or phrases. Your personal dictionary remembers replacements for future dictations; you can remove it in Voice settings. Ratings and the original inserted text stay in your private history.

Code mode for code words

In Code mode, names and symbols are written the way you say them: "camel case user id" → userId, "snake case max retries" → max_retries, "dash dash dry run" → --dry-run. Prompt mode (the default) writes a clear instruction instead, with fillers removed and punctuation fixed. The other modes are Message, Verbatim, Notes and Translate to English; press 1–6 while you speak.

Beyond Codex

The free-standing pill (bottom centre, a tab on either edge, or under the notch) dictates into any app: the text is typed into the focused field and your clipboard is restored afterwards. Every dictation is kept in a history on your Mac, so nothing you said is lost if a send fails.

Privacy

  • Speech recognition runs on your Mac; audio isn't uploaded.
  • The polish sends text only, to your own Codex on your plan, or runs on your Mac. No Pairbar server.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Claude for this?
No. Dictation and the polish work with Codex alone, on your Codex plan. If you use Claude too, the same pill sits under Claude's message box.
Does it change the Codex app?
No. Pairbar sits on top of the official Codex app and types into its message box like you would; it never patches the app.
Is my audio sent anywhere?
No. Recognition runs on your Mac. Only the text goes to your own Codex for the polish, and you can polish on your Mac instead.
