Use case

See all your Claude Code sessions and Codex threads in one list

Pairbar is a macOS app that lists every Claude Code session and Codex thread on your Mac in one sidebar. It reads the files the Claude and Codex desktop apps already keep locally, adds the cloud sessions and cloud tasks you run on Anthropic's and OpenAI's servers, and shows each chat's status (working, needs you, finished) so you can see everything at once and click straight into any of them, in the same Claude and Codex apps you already use. You don't need both apps: with only Claude (or only Codex), the list is simply that app's chats; see the Claude Code desktop sidebar.

The problem

Claude Code sessions and Codex threads pile up fast: one per bug, per branch, per review. Each desktop app lists only its own, and a chat started from the terminal, a scheduled job or the cloud can be easy to lose track of. The questions you actually have are simple, but answering them means opening two apps:

  • Which chats are still working, and on what?
  • Which one is waiting for my answer or a permission?
  • What finished while I was in a meeting, and have I looked at it yet?
  • Where is the chat I had about the payments repo last Tuesday?

How Pairbar solves it

  1. Install Pairbar and open Claude or Codex
Pairbar appears over the app's own sidebar and fills the Chats tab straight away. There's nothing to import: it reads ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude-code-sessions/…, ~/.claude/projects and Codex's ~/.codex database and session files, read-only.
  2. Read the status marks
An orange ? on the app icon means the chat needs you, and its details show the question (on a second line with Density set to Detailed). A green dot means working, and the details say what it's doing, for example "Bash · git push" or "Edit · Store.swift". A dot on the right means unread: it finished or asked something since you last opened it.
  3. Choose how the list is organised
In the bar under the search field, Group by project, app, status, date, label or none, and Sort by most recent, name or status. All · Claude · Codex filters by app, and a label filter appears once you use labels.
  4. Keep the important ones in view
Pin chats (P in the chat menu) to keep them in a Pinned section you can reorder by dragging, add labels such as "review" or "blocked", and hide chats you're done with (D). Hiding affects Pairbar only; Show hidden chats brings them back.
  5. Open any chat with one click
Clicking a row opens the chat in its own app, even when it belongs to the other one. ⌃1–9 opens the first nine chats on screen.

Cloud chats are grouped with the local chats of the same repo, or under Cloud when they have none. See Cloud chats for how current they are.

Small things that keep the list usable

  • Chats that need you always appear first, in a Needs you section.
  • While the pointer is over the list, rows don't jump around; the new order is applied when the pointer leaves.
  • A collapsed group still shows its most urgent chats with a coloured count and text, such as 3 need you or 2 working, and long groups show their first rows with Show all.
  • Resting the pointer on a row shows the branch, commits ahead and behind, the diff size, and the PR's state and checks.
  • ⇧-click starts a selection; the bar at the bottom offers Pin, Read, Unread, Label, Hide and Archive (Codex chats).

Frequently asked questions

Where does Pairbar get the list of chats from?
Claude Code sessions come from the Claude app's session records in ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude-code-sessions with transcripts from ~/.claude/projects; Codex threads come from Codex's own local database in ~/.codex. All of it is read-only.
Can I group chats by repository?
Yes. Group by project puts each repo's chats together, including its cloud chats. You can also group by app, status, date or label, or turn grouping off.
Does pinning or hiding a chat change the Claude or Codex app?
No. Pins, unread marks, labels and hiding are Pairbar's own. Codex chats you pinned in Codex show as pinned in Pairbar too.
Does Pairbar upload my chat list anywhere?
No. It reads local files on your Mac and has no account or analytics. Its only own network requests are the licence check with Lemon Squeezy and the update feed.
