The problem
After a few weeks of agent work, the chat lists fill up with titles like "Fix failing test" and "Investigate build". Each app offers its own tidy-up tools, but they only cover that app's chats, and they don't share a vocabulary: something you mark in Codex means nothing in Claude.
What most people want is simple: keep the three chats that matter today at the top, group the rest by what state they're in ("review", "blocked"), and make the finished ones disappear without deleting anything.
How Pairbar solves it
- Pin what you're working onOpen a chat's menu (⋯ or right-click) and press P. Pinned chats sit in a Pinned section at the top; drag them to reorder.
- Add your own labelsIn the menu, Labels › New label… creates a tag such as "review", "blocked" or "today". Toggle existing labels from the same submenu. Each label shows as a coloured dot on the row.
- Group or filter by labelSet Group by: label in the bar under the search field, or filter to one label from the view menu. The filter controls wrap in a narrow sidebar and keep the selected label visible. If no chats match the app and label together, Clear filters restores the full list. With ⌘K, type
Show label "review"orClear label filter. - Rename the vague onesPress R in the menu. The dialog tells you before you confirm whether the new name goes into the app itself or stays in Pairbar (see the table below).
- Hide what's finishedPress D to hide a chat from Pairbar only. Turn on Show hidden chats to see them again, marked 👁🗨.
- Do it to many chats at once⇧-click a chat (or choose Select from its menu) to start selecting. Then a plain click adds or removes a chat and ⇧-click selects a range. The bar at the bottom offers Pin, Read, Unread, Label, Hide, Archive (Codex chats) and Done.

What changes in the apps, and what stays in Pairbar
| Action | Claude chats | Codex chats |
|---|---|---|
| Pin, unread mark, labels, hide | Pairbar only | Pairbar only (chats you pinned in Codex also show as pinned) |
| Rename | a name in Pairbar only; a card explains how to rename it in Claude's own sidebar | renamed in Codex itself through your codex tool, so the Codex app and codex resume show it; kept in Pairbar only if that can't be done |
| Archive | not available; archive it in Claude | moves it to Codex's archive with codex archive (unarchive in Codex) |
| Cloud chats | rename, pin, labels and hide, all in Pairbar only | same |
A chat renamed in Pairbar only still carries the app's title in its hover card ("Renamed in Pairbar · Claude calls it …"), and search finds it by either name. See renaming.
Other ways the list organises itself
- Group by project, app, status, date, label or none; Sort by most recent, name or status.
- Chats that need you always come first, in a Needs you section.
- Workflow runs in Codex get a workflow label automatically.
- Rows don't jump around while the pointer is over the list; the new order applies when it leaves.
Without Pairbar
Each app has its own ways to keep its list tidy:
| Without Pairbar | What it covers | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude app sidebar: rename and archive | Claude chats | doesn't include Codex threads; no custom labels |
| Codex app: pin, rename, archive | Codex threads | doesn't include Claude chats |
codex archive and codex resume in a terminal | Codex threads from the CLI | no grouping or labels |
| A notes file or task board listing chat links | anything, by hand | you keep it up to date yourself |
Frequently asked questions
- Do Pairbar's labels and pins change anything in Claude or Codex?
- No. Pins, unread marks, labels and hiding are stored in Pairbar's own preferences, because neither app lets another app pin or tag its chats. Codex chats you pinned in Codex do show as pinned in Pairbar.
- Why does renaming a Claude chat only change it in Pairbar?
- Claude has no way for another app to rename its chats. Pairbar keeps the name for its own list and search, and shows how to rename the chat in Claude's sidebar.
- Does hiding a chat delete it?
- No. Hide only removes it from Pairbar's list. Turn on Show hidden chats to see it again, and it stays in its app the whole time.
- Can I label or hide several chats at once?
- Yes. ⇧-click to start selecting, click to add chats, then use the bar at the bottom: Pin, Read, Unread, Label, Hide, and Archive for Codex chats.
