Use case

Organize Claude Code chats by project, date, status or branch

Pairbar is a macOS app that lists your Claude Code chats in one sidebar over the Claude desktop app and lets you choose how that list is organised. Group chats by project (the default), by date, by status, by label, or by the branch they work on, sort them by recency, name or status, and keep the list tidy with pins, renames, hiding and bulk actions. It works with Claude Code alone; the same controls cover Codex threads if you use Codex too.

The problem

Claude Code chats pile up one per bug, per branch, per review, across every repository you touch. A flat, newest-first list is fine for the last five chats and useless for the fiftieth: you want to see one repository's chats together, or everything that's still running, or what you did yesterday.

You also want to tidy up without deleting anything: rename the chats called "Fix failing test", keep today's work at the top, and make finished chats get out of the way.

How Pairbar solves it

  1. Pick a grouping
In the bar under the search field, Group by offers project, tasks (one group per branch or worktree), app, status, date, label or none. Pairbar remembers it; it's also in Settings → Chats & sidebar → Group by and ⌘K ("Group by …").
  2. Choose the order
Sort by most recent, name, or status (needs you first). Whatever the grouping, chats that need you always appear first, in a Needs you section.
  3. Fold what you're not looking at
Click a group's title to collapse it; a collapsed group still shows its most urgent chats with a coloured count and text, such as 3 need you or 2 working. Long groups show their first rows with Show all, and Expand or collapse all groups is in the same bar.
  4. Pin and label what matters
In a chat's menu (⋯ or right-click), P pins it to a Pinned section you reorder by dragging, and Labels tags it ("review", "blocked"). Group by label, or filter to one label. More in labels and pins.
  5. Rename, hide, and do it in bulk
R renames a chat; D hides it from Pairbar ("Show hidden chats" brings it back). ⇧-click starts a selection, and the bar at the bottom offers Pin, Read, Unread, Label and Hide for all of them at once.

What changes in Claude, and what stays in Pairbar

  • Pins, labels, unread marks and hiding are Pairbar's own. They never change the Claude app, which offers other apps no way to pin or mark its chats.
  • Renaming a Claude chat gives it a name shown in Pairbar (in the list and in search); Claude keeps its own title, and the dialog says so and explains how to rename it in Claude itself. See Renaming.
  • Archiving Claude chats is done in Claude. In Pairbar, hide them, or in the Tasks view use Archive task, which hides a whole branch's chats from that view without deleting anything.
  • Codex threads, if you use Codex too, can be archived from Pairbar (through Codex's own codex archive), and renaming one renames it in Codex.

Without Pairbar

Without Pairbar, organising Claude Code chats means working with what each place offers:

  • The Claude app's sidebar: rename and archive chats in Claude itself; it lists them in its own order.
  • claude --resume: a picker scoped to the folder you run it in, which works as a per-project view in a terminal.
  • A notes file or a tracker: keep your own list of which chat is about what, by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I group Claude Code chats by repository?
Yes. Group by project is the default: each repository's chats sit together, with its cloud sessions. You can switch to tasks, status, date, label or none at any time.
Does renaming a chat in Pairbar rename it in Claude?
No. Claude has no way for another app to rename its chats, so the name is shown in Pairbar only, and the hover card shows Claude's own title. The rename dialog explains how to rename it in Claude.
Can I archive Claude Code chats from Pairbar?
Not Claude's own archive: that's only in Claude. In Pairbar you can hide chats, or archive a whole task in the Tasks view, and nothing is deleted either way. Codex threads can be archived from Pairbar.
Do I need Codex for any of this?
No. Grouping, sorting, pins, labels, renames, hiding and bulk actions all work with the Claude app alone.
