The search field#
The field at the top of the Chats tab searches:
- chat titles, projects and branches, instantly;
- everything said in the conversations: your messages and the agents' replies (not tool output). Matches show the matching line under the chat, with your words in bold.
While you search, the list is one ranked result list instead of the usual groups, in three parts:
- Titles: the chat named exactly what you typed first, then titles that start with it, then a word in the title, then anywhere in the title.
- Projects and branches: chats whose project or branch matches.
- In conversations: chats that match only inside what was said.
Within each part, newest first. Pinned chats and "Needs you" rank like the rest while you search. In the Tasks view, tasks stay in their sections instead: a task shows when its title or one of its chats matches, opened up on its matching chats. Case, accents and extra spaces don't matter; with several words, each has to match somewhere.
The first search over all chats builds a small text cache. Pairbar builds it quietly about 20 seconds after launch, so searches are usually instant. It lives in ~/Library/Caches/<bundle id>/text, readable only by you. It's pruned as chats disappear, and can be cleared in Settings → Chats & sidebar → More options → Clear search cache.
Actions (⌘K)#
⌘K, while Claude or Codex is in front, puts the cursor in the search field. Typing also shows matching Actions above the chats — or just below the titles when a chat's title is (or starts with) what you typed, so Enter opens that chat. Words can come in any order:
- New chat, New agent, New workflow;
- Agents, Workflows, Settings, Show welcome, and Contact support or Report a problem (both open Contact support);
- Mark all as read, and hiding Pairbar to show the app's own sidebar;
- the window layouts: Overlay, Basket, Side by side, Stacked, Basket: Focus (any of the three docks the basket when you're in Overlay), Swap apps;
- Fork "<chat>", for the chat the app is showing (it opens the fork's composer);
- For this chat: …, the focused chat's context actions, listed first: its task's suggestions ("For this chat: Ask Claude to fix the failing checks…"), Second opinion from Codex…, Hand off to Codex…, Open with “…” in basket, Run “<workflow>”…, Copy branch, Copy PR link, Run <agent> on this branch…, and Use the <skill> skill (it opens the composer with the skill asked for);
- Start <agent>, Run "<workflow>";
- Group by …, View: Tasks, Show label "…", Clear label filter;
- in the Tasks view, each task's actions with its name: Open all of "…" in basket, New Claude chat in "…", New Codex chat in "…", Open PR #… of "…", Mark "…" done, Reopen "…", Rename task "…"…, Archive task "…";
- agent actions (see Agent actions): Approve agent request “…” and Decline agent request “…” for each request waiting for you, Pause agent actions (Resume agent actions while paused), and Stop all agent-started chats;
- Density: Comfortable, Density: Detailed, Tint: Neutral, Tint: Warm (the one in use says "In use");
- dictation: Start dictation (into the composer), Voice history (the sidebar's list), and, from three letters, your dictations that match: "Dictation: fix the flaky…" puts that text in the composer again;
- every setting, as "Settings: <name>" ("Settings: Glass", "Settings: Notification banner"…), after the other actions: Settings opens at that row and lights it up (see Finding a setting).
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| ↑ ↓ | move through actions, then chats |
| Enter | run the highlighted action or open the chat (the first result if nothing is highlighted) |
| Esc | clear the search and go back to the app |
Quick search from anywhere (⌃⌥K)#
⌃⌥K works from any app:
- Over Claude or Codex: it's the same as ⌘K.
- Anywhere else: a Spotlight-style panel opens at the top of the screen.
- Empty, it shows what needs you, what's working, what just finished, and your latest chats.
- Typing searches chats (inside conversations too) and actions.
- ↑↓ moves, Enter opens the chat in its app, Esc closes the panel and returns you to where you were.
Press ⌃⌥K again to close it.
